Millions of people in South Africa and across the globe are celebrating the 94th birthday of Nelson Mandela.
The day has become known as Mandela Day and many thousands give 67 minutes of their time to take part in charitable acts.
Mandela spent 67 years of his life engaged in political activism.
A former cellmate of Mandela, Ahmed Kathrada spoke fondly of his friend:
“We hope under his inspiration, under his legacy, our country will move toward that situation where all of us – we wont be alive then, but people of South Africa – will get rid of poverty, hunger and unemployment.”
Mandela became South Africa’s first black president after spending 27 years in jail on Robben Island.
