MONTREAL - A 25-year-old woman became Montreal's ninth homicide victim of 2011 late Tuesday night, and her boyfriend has been charged with second-degree murder.

According to Montreal police Constable Daniel Fortier, police received a 911 call at around 10 p.m. reporting a fight of some kind near the corner of Ste. Catherine St. E. and Leclaire St. When they arrived, they spotted a man running away from the area. He was apprehended, said Fortier.

The female victim, identified as Elena Prekatsounakis, was found in a nearby apartment building, suffering from multiple stab wounds. She was pronounced dead a short time later.

According to Montreal police Constable Olivier Lapointe, the suspect, identified Selehe Rashid Othman, 31, escaped from the apartment via a third-storey window, dropping several metres to the ground before taking off on foot. Remarkably, he was not injured in the jump.

Police confirmed that the suspect and the victim were living together in the apartment where the woman was found.

Lapointe said police had never been called to the apartment before.

Investigators quickly cordoned off the area and were expected to remain on the scene for much of the day Wednesday.

At this point last year, there had been four homicides in Montreal.
