Johannesburg. Two Tanzanians are being questioned by South African authorities in connection with a 55-kilogramme drugs haul. They will be arraigned in court tomorrow (Friday).
The Hawks, South Africa’s multidisciplinary agency that investigates and prosecutes organised crime and corruption, smashed a massive drug distributing syndicate in Kempton Park in Ekurhuleni in Gauteng province, seizing narcotics worth Rand 75million (Sh12.7 billion).
Hawks Spokesman Paul Ramaloko told The Citizen that officers pounced on a storage facility yesterday morning and arrested two Tanzanians who were allegedly distributing the drugs.
He declined to name them, though, saying the syndicate was big and more people—including South Africans, were being pursued in connection with the crime. The narcotics include 25 kilos of heroin, 15 kilos of cocaine and 15 kilos of tik.
Mr Ramaloko described the seizure as one of their biggest successes in recent history.  “We are now closing in on the big shots,” he said. “We will definitely arrest more suspects…this is a very big underworld group which includes South African nationals…we will nab them.”
The seizure of that haul is the second of such magnitude in four months involving Tanzanians. In July this year, two Tanzanian women were arrested transporting a haul of drugs.
Agnes Gerald, 25 and also known as Masogange, and 24-year-old Melisa Edward were caught in Johannesburg with 180 kilogrammes of methamphetamine worth about Sh7 billion.
After a two-month stint in South African jails, a Kempton Park court in Gauteng found Masogange guilty of smuggling Ephedrine or Precursor, a substance used to make drugs, and fined her R15000 (about Sh2.5 million). Edward was set free after the court heard that she had just accompanied Masogange.  In recent years, a good number of young Tanzanians have reportedly joined Johannesburg city’s criminal underworld, and they are used as couriers for drug traffickers.
They are lured to South Africa with the promise of a good life only to sink into drug abuse and trafficking. Because of a rise in the number of Tanzanians engaged in drug trafficking, the government proposes to tighten controls and boost investigations into drug trafficking. The agency would function like the Prevention and Combating of Corruption Bureau.
Last month, President Jakaya Kikwete cautioned Tanzanians living abroad that the government would not protect them or intercede should they be caught trafficking in drugs.

Man hit by two trains near Stockholm

A man has died after he was run over by two trains on two separate tracks in the southern Stockholm suburb of Huddinge on Wednesday night, after witnesses say he fell on the tracks.
"We were all running, screaming, and waving at the second train but it continued down the tracks to a full stop like normal," witness Gregory Bane told The Local.

The incident occurred at 6.50pm when an apparently drunk man tumbled onto the tracks in front of horrified bystanders.

Local police confirmed that the man did not survive the collisions.

"I can confirm that he is dead, and that he died on the scene," Anders Lantz of the Flemingsberg police told The Local.

Stockholm public transit operator SL confirmed that the man was hit by two separate trains.

"From what I understand from the accident, the person was first hit by a train from (national rail operator) SJ and in some way bounced to another track where the commuter train hit him," SL spokesman Henrik Palmer told The Local.

Witnesses reported a great deal of confusion and mayhem as the second train approached.

"There was the sound of the heavy freight train on the outer track headed into Stockholm and people started yelling," Bane said.

"He definitely fell. I heard a bang like someone threw something at the side of the train. Men came running toward me as I ran towards the noise. I couldn't see anyone just a grey mass on the tracks when the commuter train going to Stockholm came down the tracks."

The man who ended up on the tracks was "staggering wildly" on the platform, according to Bane, and was seen "yelling and joking" with a friend immediately before the accident.

Police remain tight-lipped about further details.

30,000 without power as storm Hilde hits

    The Local

    17 Nov 2013, 10:04

At least 30 000 households in northern Sweden are without power and fallen trees are blocking roads following the storm which swept through on Saturday night.

A powerful storm pulled in late yesterday over Jämtland, Norrbotten and Västerbotten. Shortly before 7pm at least 35,000 households were without electricity and many remain without power as they awoke on Sunday morning.
Worst affected are E.on and Vattenfall's customers in northern and Västernorrland.
At 8am over 16,000 of Eon's customers in Jämtland, Västerbotten and Västernorrland were without power.
"This is a relatively serious situation. There are many faults spread over a large geographical area," said Jacob Holmström at Eon.
Eon has called in resources from other parts of Sweden and which are heading towards the affected area.
"We are concentrating really, but considering how many interruptions there are there is an imminent danger that many customers will be without power on Monday," Holmström said.
Vattenfall had received 70 reports of problems by 8.30am on Sunday, meaning about 17,500 customers are without power.
"It's been hard for us to go out during the night because of the strong winds. We have called in reinforcements from other regions in order to fix as much as possible," said press officer Michael Petrovic Wågmark.
It remained unclear on Sunday morning when customers can expect to get power back.
"We are doing everything we can to give them back their power as soon as possible. But given that there are so many interruptions there is a risk that customers will be without power on Monday," Petrovic Wågmark said.
Police in Jämtland have urged people not to venture out on the roads unnecessarily.
Fallen trees are strewn across roads in the region following the storm with most problems on the E12 in the area of Lycksele.
"There is a lot of trees on the road. We have staff who are working hard to clean up," said Beisi Sundin at the Transport Administration.
Motorists travelling on the E45 have been cautioned.
"There you'll have to zigzag a way between fallen trees," Sundin said.
The storm has put a stop to a biathlon ski tournament due to take place in Östersund on Sunday.
"There is too much wind, the competitors' safety can not be guaranteed," said event organiser Anders Andersson.

Dar es Salaam.Dr Sengondo Mvungi, a member of the Constitution Review Commission (CRC), died in a South African hospital yesterday afternoon after a nine-day battle with injuries he suffered during a robbery.
The renowned lawyer and 2005 presidential candidate was attacked in the wee hours of November 4 at his residence at Kibamba on the outskirts of the city. He was admitted at the Intensive Care Unit of the Muhimbili Orthopaedic Institute before he was flown to Milpark hospital in Johannesburg on Thursday last week. He had been unconscious for five days. NCCR Mageuzi Chairman James Mbatia confirmed his death at 3:30pm. The party chairman, who has worked with Dr Mvungi for a long time, said he received news of Mr Mvungi’s death with profound shock. Mr Mbatia was one of many leaders to frequent MOI to check on Dr Mvungi. The CRC member was an advocate of the High Court and Court of Appeal of Tanzania. He taught at the University of Dar es Salaam before moving to the University of Bagamoyo and was also a member of the NCCR Mageuzi National Executive Committee.
Dr Mvungi suffered serious injuries after six gangsters raided his home at Kimbamba on the outskirts of the city. The assailants made away with money, his laptop and a mobile phone.
Police arrested nine suspects, who are still being questioned after they were found with Dr Mvungi’s mobile phone and machetes. Dr Mvungi became well known countrywide after he contested the top job as the flag bearer of NCCR Mageuzi and came fifth out of 10 candidates, having garnered 55,819 votes (0.43%). CRC chairman Judge (rtd) Joseph Warioba said the death of Dr Mvungi was a gap in his commission because he was an important person who had expertise in constitution making process. “He was a researcher who was always keen in whatever he did. I knew and worked with him even before he became a member of CRC, so his death is really touching my heart,’’ Judge Warioba told The Citizen.
Chadema Chairman Freeman Mbowe sent his condolences to Dr Mvungi’s family and the nation in general, saying his contribution was exemplary. “We have been with him for more than 20 years in the fight against problems bedeviling the majority Tanzanians, and he has been working closely with all political parties,” Mr Mbowe said in a telephone interview.
Dr Mvungi was among the few people in the country who wanted to see the country get a consitution that would serve the interests of the country, he added. “We are so sad that he has died before seeing the document that he fought tirelessly for.” Dr Mvungi was at home when gangsters broke into his house and ordered everyone in the house to lie on the floor. He was slashed with machetes.
According to family members, he did not give in easily and fought back, refusing to be intimidated by the robbers. They started hitting him in earnest after he injured one suspect in the left eye, his granddaughter Dorice said in an interview. “This made them so angry that they started slashing granddad while dragging him to the kitchen,” Dorice said.
Wellwishers took him to Tumbi hospital in Kibaha before he was transferred to Muhimbili.
There were fears that Dr Mvungi’s laptop might have crucial documents related to the constitution review process but CRC Chairman Joseph Warioba was quick to dismiss the idea.
CRC members would carry only their documents, he said, while sensitive ones were left in the office. “It is not true that his laptop contained the said documents,” Judge Warioba added, “as all crucial documents are not entered into personal laptops.”
He confirmed, though, that Dr Mvungi lost a lot of personal data--as would be expected with any researcher.

Cargo train derailment cause chaos in Stockholm

    Derailment snarls Stockholm rush hour

    TT/The Local/dl | 12 Nov 2013, 10:30
Trains in central Stockholm were brought to a standstill after a cargo train derailed near Södra Station, causing ripple effects that affected all rail traffic in the capital region.
"It will take a long time to repair the damage caused by the derailment. It could take several days or up to a week," said Denny Josefsson of the Swedish Transit Agency (Trafikverket) to the TT news agency.

The derailment occurred around 6.30am when a cargo train jumped the tracks about 200 metres north of Södra Station. The train then struck and damaged a pillar.

"There can be a risk of collapse," police spokesman Sven-Erik Olsson told TT.

A commuter train traveling behind the cargo train was left stranded on the tracks, with plans for it to travel in reverse back to the station.

The cargo train wasn't carrying any dangerous cargo and no injuries have been reported.

Twenty-five emergency workers were quickly on the scene at Södra Station, which was cordoned off.

"We want to be sure there won't be a collapse, but nothing has collapsed yet," Ulf Tholén of the Stockholm fire brigade told TT.

In addition to commuter rail traffic, long-haul passenger rail has also been affected, with national rail operator SJ hoping to redirect trains to and from Gothenburg through Västerås, while trains to and from Malmö can turn at Södertälje, and trains to and from Eskilstuna can turn at Flemingsberg.

"There are going to be major delays," SJ spokesman Anders Edgren told TT.

All commuter rail traffic north of Stockholm was stopping at Central Station, while trains to the south were diverted to Alvsjö. Extra buses were put in service to help deal with the delays.

"It's going to be a terrible rush hour, but we hope things will work as well as possible," SL spokesman Bengt Stenberg told TT at the peak of the crisis.

According to Sveriges Television (SVT) all train services will remain grounded
