Tanzania asks Museven to mediate in row with Rwanda
By Peter Nyanje (citizen)
The way Rwanda reacted to the suggestion is not proper. Rwanda could have turned down the advice and no one would have had a problem with that.
Dodoma. Tanzania has asked Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni to mediate in its spat with Rwanda.
Prime Minister Mizengo Pinda made the revelation in Dodoma yesterday when responding to a question by the Leader of the Official Opposition in Parliament, Mr Freeman Mbowe.
Mr Mbowe, who is also the Hai MP, wanted to know what was being done to normalise relations between the two East African Community (EAC) member states.
He said Rwanda had apparently convinced other EAC member states to sideline Tanzania.
Mr Mbowe asked the government to clearly state its position and measures being taken to address the situation.
Mr Pinda told Parliament that President Kikwete had sought President Museveni’s mediation to prevent relations from deteriorating further. “It is our hope that wisdom will prevail and this issue will be solved amicably…if these efforts will not bear fruit, we shall consider another course of action, but we are committed to resolving this peacefully,” he said.
But Mr Pinda accused Rwanda of overreacting, saying Tanzania had no reason to differ with its neighbour. He added, however, that Tanzania does not believe that it is being sidelined from EAC matters as a result of its strained relations with Rwanda.
There was no official EAC engagements from which Tanzania had been sidelined, the PM said.
Mr Pinda reiterated that President Kikwete made it clear in his latest end-of-the-month speech that Tanzania had no intention of entering into conflict with Rwanda.
“And let me emphasise that as far as Tanzania is concerned, we have no problem with Rwanda. But listening to what Rwandan leaders are saying, it is obvious that they are still not happy with President Kikwete’s suggestion that they should talk to rebels as a way of bringing lasting peace to Rwanda and the Great Lakes Region.
“The way Rwanda reacted to the suggestion is not proper. Rwanda could have turned down the advice and no one would have had a problem with that,” Mr Pinda said.
Diplomatic relations between the two countries began to sour in May when President Kikwete urged Rwanda to engage FDRL rebels in talks. He made the suggestion during a meeting of Great Lakes Region countries, which met on the sidelines of the Africa Union Summit in Addis Ababa in May.

By Frank Kimboy
IN SUMMARY
For now we can only confirm the death...we will release more details, including the matter of burial arrangements, after the arrival of the body.
Dar es Salaam. A Tanzania People’s Defence Forces (TPDF) officer was killed in a grenade attack in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo on Wednesday.
A TPDF statement identified the officer as Major Khatibu Mshindo, who was with the UN peacekeeping mission in the DRC.
Several soldiers were injured in the attack.
The statement said Major Mshindo and other soldiers were at their base when a grenade was lobbed at them by unknown assailants.
The TPDF statement did not give the number of peacekeepers injured in the attack.
However, the international media said three Tanzania soldiers and two South African were wounded.
“A Tanzanian officer was killed, three other Tanzanian soldiers were wounded along with two South Africans,” the mission’s spokesperson Madnodje Mounoubai was quoted saying.
TPDF spokesman Major Erick Komba told The Citizen that they were liaising with the UN to determine when the fallen soldier’s body be brought home.
“For now we can only confirm the death...we will release more details, including the matter of burial arrangements, after the arrival of the body,” he said.
Tanzanian, South African and Malawian troops have been deployed as part of the Force Intervention Brigade, which has a UN mandate to engage in direct fighting against the M23 militia who have been destabilising the east of the DRC.
UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on Wednesday condemned the attack.
“The Secretary-General deplores in the strongest terms the killing and wounding of UN peacekeepers,” said a statement issued on Wednesday night by Ban’s spokesperson.

Wanaijeria 168 na mtanzania 1 wakamatwa na madawa ya kulevya hotelini china
A total of 168 suspects allegedly involved in drug trafficking were captured in a crackdown launched by the local police in Guangzhou, Guangdong Province Tuesday.
Most people detained by the police during the campaign are foreigners originally from West African countries, said a late Tuesday statement by the Guangzhou Public Security Bureau, adding most of those are from Nigeria and Mali.
A huge batch of drugs, suspected to be heroin and methamphetamines, was confiscated during the crackdown, which 1,300 police officers carried out. The bust took place at Lihua Hotel in Yuexiu district.
A large sum of money made from the drug trade and several imitation guns were also seized. Initial investigations show that some imitation guns belong to Chinese suspects.
Some foreigners in Yuexiu, who have expired visas, have ventured into the drug trafficking business. The hotel’s Chinese owner was also taken away for interrogation.
The city’s public security bureau said the case is under investigation and declined to give further details when reached by the Global Times on Wednesday.
The Guangzhou Daily reported that police should investigate the identities of the 168 detainees and whether the case is related to international drug trafficking gangs.
