sweden police bust massive sex trafficking ring

Police bust massive sex trafficking ring

Six men are set to be charged on Wednesday in the Gothenburg District Court on suspicions of operating a comprehensive human trafficking operation which brought young women from Romania to Sweden to sell sex.

According to prosecutors, the trafficking ring is one of the largest of its kind ever uncovered in Sweden.

”There are many people involved who pulled in large amounts from this criminal activity,” said prosecutor Thomas Eliasson in a statement.

Last year in Gothenburg, 255 men were reported and fined for buying sex, a number which led local police to crackdown on the crime.

“This is quite a lot and it is really thanks to the local police in the city who have actively fought against this. An operation with a focus on the crime. You can’t do several small samples from time to time, because then you can’t report 255 men in one year,” Ulla Brehm of the Västra Götaland police told the TT news agency.

Further investigation led police to the discovery of the Romania-linked trafficking ring.

According to Brehm, investigators travelled to Romania in the hunt for the nucleus of the operations.

On the trip, a number of suspects were questioned and search warrants carried out, resulting in six men being arrested and remanded in custody.

Prosecutors plan to present formal charges against the men during a press conference on Wednesday.

Almost all of the women connected to the reported sex cases in Gothenburg are 18-years-old or older and are connected to the Romania-based ring.

The women then performed sex acts for money in playgrounds, cemeteries and parking garages around the city, according to TT.

Exactly how many women were selling sex on the streets in Sweden remains unclear, however.

Senegal's Abdoulaye Wade accepts election run-off

Senegalese President Abdoulaye Wade (R) arrives on 27 February 2012 for a public declaration at the presidential palace in Dakar. Analysts say President Abdoulaye Wade will struggle in the second round on 18 March.
Senegal's leader Abdoulaye Wade has admitted that he will now go to a run-off after failing to win more than 50% in the first round of voting.
"The numbers are clear, we are headed to a second round," his spokesman Amadou Sall said.
Unofficial figures show Mr Wade, 85, is likely to face former Prime Minister Macky Sall in the run-off.
European Union observers have criticised the lack of official results from Sunday's contentious elections.
'Inconceivable' delay
Senegal's election commission has yet to release any provisional results, which are being announced by local media as they trickle in from polling stations.
Earlier unofficial results - with more than half of the vote counted - gave Mr Wade 32%, with his closest rival Macky Sall on 25%. There were 12 other candidates.
Analysts say Mr Wade is likely to struggle in the second round, when the field narrows to two candidates.
Mr Wade's bid for a third term has sparked weeks of violent protests, leading to about six deaths.

Polling day itself was largely peaceful - but the BBC's Umaru Fofana in Dakar says people are now becoming impatient and suspicious that there are no official results.
Election officials previously said provisional results would be available on Tuesday - but then put that back to Friday, saying they were acting within the law.
EU observers have questioned this delay.
"In the internet-era, it is inconceivable that the Senegalese will need to wait until Friday to know the official results,'' the head of the delegation of European parliamentarians, Cristian Dan Preda said.
A second round - due on 18 March - is inevitable, according to foreign observers.
"Any other outcome seems statistically impossible after what we know and hear," EU observer mission chief Thijs Berman said.
Until late on Monday, Mr Wade had been confident that he would be able to get enough votes to win an outright victory.
"To all of my supporters, my allies, my sympathisers, I ask that you remain mobilised," Mr Wade read from a prepared statement as he met reporters for the first time since the elections.
"At this very hour... everything is still possible - victory or a run-off," he said.
Our correspondent says the president also said that he would be opening talks with opposition candidates ahead of the second round.
The president was booed as he cast his vote on Sunday in the capital, Dakar - and he lost in his own constituency in the middle-class Dakar neighbourhood of Point E, Senegal's national APS news agency reports.
Mr Sall, who is running for the first time, told the BBC that it would be "easy" to win in the second round, as he said all opposition candidates had agreed to unite behind whoever emerged as Mr Wade's challenger.
Senegal's constitutional court ruled in January that Mr Wade could stand again on the grounds that his first term had not counted since it began before the two-term limit was introduced in 2001.
Senegal, a former French colony, is seen as a stable democracy with an unbroken series of elections since independence in 1960.
It remains the only West African country where the army has never seized power.

Nahodha: Sijui DCI Manumba Alikoitoa Ripoti Ya Mwakyembe

Waziri wa Mambo ya Ndani,Shamsi Vuai Nahodha
ASEMA UCHUNGUZI BADO UNAENDELEA NA MATOKEO ATATANGAZA YEYE, ATAKA MANUMBA AULIZWE MWENYEWE CHANZO CHA TAARIFA YAKE
Ramadhan Semtawa

Victoria and Daniel thank well-wishers

Victoria and Daniel thank well-wishers

Since the birth of Princess Estelle on Thursday, congratulations have been flooding in to the happy parents.

On Saturday, Crown Princess Victoria and Prince Daniel thanked their many well-wishers, in a statement published on the Swedish royal family's website.

"A warm thank you for all the friendly greetings and congratulations we've received on Princess Estelle's birth. We truly appreciate your support and that so many share our joy," the new parents wrote.

In a formal ceremony on Friday, Sweden's youngest royalty was blessed and received her name, but several traditions still remain to be observed.

Roger Lundgren, royal expert and editor in chief of Kungliga Magasinet, a magazine about royalty, believes that Victoria and Daniel's daughter will be baptized in Stockholm's Slottskyrkan church in June.

He also suspects that the godparent tradition that has emerged between Swedish and foreign royal families will lead to Princess Estelle having more godparents than the four that Crown Princess Victoria and her siblings have.

In the short time since her birth at 4.26am on Thursday, Princess Estelle has quickly become a very public person.

During her first day of life, more than 2,300 news stories were published about her in Swedish press, according to market analyser Retriever.

But Swedes weren't the only ones interested in Estelle. International interest spawned some 3,300 articles worldwide.

Outside of Sweden, the biggest interest in the newborn princess was found in Germany, where nearly 800 articles were published.

TAIFA LIMEKOSA VIONGOZI-WARIOBA

SWEDEN CELEBRATE NEW PRINCESS

'It's a girl': Prince Daniel

                     'It's a girl': Prince Daniel

Sweden has a new princess. Crown Princess Victoria has given birth to a daughter, announced the happy father from Stockholm's Karolinska Hospital early on Thursday morning.
"This morning at 04.26am a very cute princess was born, 51 centimetres tall and weighing in at 3,280 grammes," said the Prince.

"My feelings are all over the place right now."

Mother and baby are doing fine according to the new father.

"It was all very nervous. There are always risks giving birth. But it went well," said Prince Daniel, taking the opportunity to thank the Karolinska hospital for the care they have received.

He also asked the gathered press to respect the privacy of the family.

"As I am sure you can all understand, we have a great need just to be our own little family right now. You understand that surely, that we want to treasure what has just happened," he said.

Specialist doctor Lennart Nordström was in charge of the medical procedure.

"They came in just before 1am, so it all went fairly quickly," he told the press, adding that it all went very well.

"There is a radiant, happy new mother with a baby in her arms. The couple are glowing with happiness. There is something special about becoming parents," said Nordström to TT.

He didn't want to take any credit for delivering the next heir to the throne of Sweden.

"It is the Crown Princess who has given birth to a child. We have supported her in doing that, but she did all the work," said Nordström.

It is still unclear how long mother and baby will remain at the hospital.

"This will, like in all other cases, depend on how mother and baby are and from that judgement it will be decided how long the Crown Princess and her daughter will stay," he said.

Nordström told the gathered press he has been on standby for a long time after being asked early in the Princess' pregnancy if he would help deliver her baby.

"I haven't left Stockholm since New Year," said Nordström, adding that it has been an honour.

Celebrations and ceremony will now begin in Stockholm and across the country.

At noon on Thursday a special 42-gun salute will be fired from the cannons on the Skeppsholmen island, in central Stockholm, to celebrate the birth of the new princess, Richard Beck-Friis, head of the Commandant Staff at the Royal Palace, told TT.

On Friday, salutes wil be fired from other locations in the country, namely Göteborg, Karlskrona, Härnösand and Boden where salute batteries are kept.

"And yet another salute will be fired in Stockholm then as well, this time from Kastellholmen," said Beck-Friis to TT.

The carpets of the maternity ward have already been changed from their usual colour to a striking red to mark the occasion.

"I change the carpets here every week and when I heard the news I decided go for it," said Daniel Holm, responsible for the hospital carpets, to TT.

Sweden braces for family immigration boom

Sweden braces for family immigration boom

The number of people seeking permanent residency in Sweden as relatives of immigrants already in the country will increase with 45 percent to 59,500 in 2012, a number comparable to 41,000 last year according to the latest predictions from Swedish Migration Board (Migrationsverket).

The main reason behind the expected increase is a recent verdict in the Migration Court of Appeal (Migrationsöverdomstolen) which is set to make it easier to seek a residence permit for people from countries where it is difficult to produce valid identification documents.

The larger part of the rise in applications is expected to come from Somalia.

Two years ago, two precendential verdicts from the court had demanded tighter controls on ID papers for those seeking residency permits on the grounds of having relatives in Sweden.

This hit Somali applicants the hardest as there are no official authorities in Somalia to issue the kind of identification papers which could be recognized by Swedish authorities.

But in January this year, the court loosened regulations. The verdict means that if someone can confirm consanguinity through DNA-testing, there is no need to affirm the applicants' identity in any other way.

The Migration Board is therefore expecting a surge in applications from Somalia.

“Legally the verdict will increase the chances of close family members to be reunited,” said Jonas Lindgren of the agency to TT.

According to the Migration Board, there was already a large backlog of applicants who had been turned down when the court had asked for national ID papers. The rise is expected to come from Somali applicants.

“We have started to look at that group but the verdict will probably affect applicants from Afghanistan as well,” said Lindgren.

However, Lindgren is confident that the agency can cope with the rise in applications, with some help from the government.

“There is already long waiting times and there are many open cases that we are working on completing. We have therefore turned to the government and said that we are counting on needing an extra 100 million kronor ($15 million),” said Lindgren.

Tanzania police arrested over 'witchcraft killing' riot

Map
Four Tanzanian police officers have been detained after two people were killed during a protest over alleged witchcraft killings.
A regional commander told the BBC that police had opened fire in the south-eastern town of Songea to stop an angry crowd from smashing public property.
The protesters said not enough had been done to find those behind the recent killing of six women.
Police deny the murders were done to obtain body parts for witchcraft use.
In recent years, there have been a spate of killings of people with albinism in Tanzania.
Their body parts are prized in parts of Africa, with witch-doctors claiming they have special powers to bring success in business and love.
The women killed in the Songea area were not believed to be albinos.
Stampede Ruvuma regional police commander Michael Kamhanda told the BBC that police officers "were forced to use live bullets" after they "had exhausted all means to disperse rowdy crowds".
Thousands of people took to the streets of Songea on Wednesday - after four women were killed and their bodies allegedly mutilated last week.
They attacked the police station and several government offices - and were heading towards a presidential residence when officers opened fire, Mr Kamhanda said.
Two other people were killed during a stampede, the AFP news agency reports.
A total of six women have been killed in the area since November - but Ruvuma police say there is no evidence, despite a widespread belief among local residents, that the killers cut off parts of the bodies for use in witchcraft.
