59 killed in Kenya mall Attack

"Bursts of gunfire can be heard"At least 59 people were killed and 175 injured in Saturday's attack on a Nairobi shopping centre, the Kenyan interior minister has said.Joe Lenku said 1,000 people had managed to escape from the Westgate centre after the assault by suspected al-Shabab militants. He added that between 10 to 15 attackers were still in the building. It is not known how many civilians remain trapped there - either as hostages or hiding from the militants. The UK Foreign Office has confirmed that three Britons are among the dead, and says the number is likely to rise.French, Chinese, Ghanaian and Canadian citizens are also among the foreigners confirmed dead.British Prime Minister David Cameron said: "It is an absolutely sickening and despicable attack of appalling brutality."There is a heavy military presence both in and around the shopping centre. Sporadic gunfire can be heard from inside. There are reports that the gunmen are currently holed up in a supermarket. The Somali militant group al-Shabab says it carried out the attack on the upmarket shopping centre in response to Kenyan military operations in Somalia. There are about 4,000 Kenyan troops in the south of Somalia, where they have been fighting the militants since 2011.'Watching and monitoring'Kenyan officials said "major operations" were under way, with police and soldiers preparing an apparent bid to bring an end to the stand-off.But Mr Lenku stressed that the operation was "very, very delicate"."The priority is to save as many lives as possible,'' he said. The BBC's Will Ross at the scene said it would be extremely difficult for the military do a quick raid on the building because of all the people inside.PlayInterior Minister Joseph Ole Lenku says the operation at the shopping centre is "very very delicate"Al-Shabab has claimed there are at least 36 hostages, but this cannot be independently confirmed. There are also likely to be people hiding away from the attackers. Our correspondent says the full extent of the attack will not be known until the military is back in control.Meanwhile, people are still escaping from the building.Cecile Ndwiga got out on Sunday morning, saying she had been hiding under a vehicle in the basement car park but could not leave earlier because "the shootout was all over - left, right".The authorities have asked journalists to exercise caution when reporting military developments because the gunmen might be monitoring the media. The authorities are also appealing for Kenyans to donate blood. Big queues have formed at a Nairobi donation centre. The attack began at about 12:00 local time (09:00 GMT) on Saturday, when the militants entered the Westgate centre, throwing grenades and firing automatic weapons. A children's day was being held at the time - children are among those reported killed.PlayManager: "Bullets were running over my head...I crawled into my office and I locked myself inside."Witnesses report seeing many bodies strewn round tables of unfinished fast food - with pop music left playing in the background. Some witnesses said the militants told Muslims to leave and said non-Muslims would be targeted."They came and said: 'If you are Muslim, stand up. We've come to rescue you'," said Elijah Lamau. He said the Muslims left with their hands up, and then the gunmen shot two people.BBC security correspondent Frank Gardner says a security source told him that at least one of the attackers was a woman who appeared to have a leadership role.Foreigners among deadIn a televised address on Saturday evening, Mr Kenyatta said: "We shall hunt down the perpetrators. We shall get to them and we shall punish them for this heinous crime."He said he had "personally lost family members in the Westgate attack".Kenyans have been shocked by the news of the attack in an upmarket shopping centreMilitary and police are out in force at the Westgate centre, trying to capture the gunmenThey are stopping and searching anyone in the areaThe shopping centre was popular with foreigners and wealthy Kenyans - many of Indian descentMost of those who were inside the centre when the gun battle began managed to flee, but some were trappedArmed police combed the corridors as terrified shoppers fledSome went to extraordinary lengths to escapeBritish Foreign Secretary William Hague said there would "undoubtedly" be British nationals caught up in Saturday's events, while the US State Department said it had reports that American citizens were injured in what it called "a senseless act of violence".Prominent Ghanian poet Kofi Awoonor - who was was attending a literary festival in Nairobi - also died, as has a Chinese woman.Security experts are reported to have warned that the Israeli-owned complex was in danger of being subjected to a terror attack.Al-Shabab, which is part of the al-Qaeda network, has repeatedly threatened attacks on Kenyan soil if Nairobi did not pull its troops out of Somalia. This is one of the worst incidents in Kenya since the attack on the US embassy in August 1998.PlayFootage from inside the mall shows the aftermath of the shootout

syrians find new home in Sweden

War weary Syrians find new home in Sweden

22 Sep 2013, 14:00Syrians who have fled the conflict in their homeland are starting to find their feet in Sweden after the country granted residency to all asylum seekers who have made their way to Swedish shores reports AFP who visited the Märst refugee centre north of Stockholm.Six-month-old Nour al Hodl smiles, perched on her mother's knee in the dining room of a spotless refugee reception centre in Märsta, north of Stockholm. When the Hodl family fled the bombings and violence in the Syrian city of Aleppo earlier this year they had just one goal in mind: to reach Sweden. This month the Scandinavian nation became the first in Europe to grant residency to all Syrian asylum seekers who managed to make their way to Swedish shores, with the exception of suspected war criminals."When we walked out the door of our house in Aleppo we never knew if we'd make it... or if someone would shoot at us," Nour's father Kahled al Hodl told AFP.But he adds, with a smile, that today he can imagine his daughter growing up to become a doctor.Sweden is an attractive destination for refugees because "we have a completely apolitical approach to asylum applications in Sweden," said Fredrik Beijer, head of legal affairs at the Swedish Migration Board (Migrationsverket). With one of the world's most generous refugee policies, Sweden has welcomedtens of thousands of people fleeing dictatorships and wars from Chile in the 1970s to Bosnia in the 1990s.During that time the country developed an extensive reception system for new arrivals, including publicly funded housing, free language courses, job coaching and social welfare payments.Syrians have been the largest group of asylum seekers in 2013, ahead of refugees from Somalia.Migration Minister Tobias Billström said the increase was understandable."The humanitarian crisis in Syria is escalating," he said. "We should show solidarity."According to the Migration Board nearly 11,000 Syrians have obtained asylum in Sweden since 2012 and the figure is expected to rise. With its international reputation as a haven for those fleeing violence and persecution, it is perhaps unsurprising that Sweden has become the top westerndestination for Syrians along with Germany. But Sweden stands out, even when compared with its liberal Scandinavianneighbours.Despite having similarly generous refugee policies, Norway has taken in less than a thousand Syrians since 2012 and Denmark only slightly more -- although the Danes recently decided to accept all Syrians fleeing the worst-hit areas. The Swedish approach however is in line with its ranking among the world's top foreign aid donors and its vocal support for people's right to asylum when their lives are threatened."My sister, Imam, has been living in Gothenburg for the last two months," Hodl said."We had heard that Sweden gives residence permits to Syrians and Imam wassuffering from psychological problems caused by the war. All the family chipped in to get her to Sweden."During the 2000s Sweden took in more Iraqi refugees than any other Westernnation, reaching a peak of 18,559 in 2007.Most of them converged on the town of Södertälje, near Stockholm, whichhas experienced a severe housing shortage, made worse recently by the arrivalof thousands of Syrians.Sweden's migration policy is not without critics -- not just from the anti-immigration Sweden Democrats party, but also among centre-right parties -- who have argued that new arrivals should learn to fend for themselves. They point to persistently high unemployment among refugees, even years after arriving in the country. That is a fate that Hodl hopes to avoid. When his cybercafe was destroyed in a bomb attack he and his 17-year-old wife Walaa decided Aleppo no longer offered them a future. The couple sold their home to raise the 4,000 euros ($5,410) they needed topay people smugglers to get them out of the country."A smuggler got us across the Turkish border along with 90 other people andthen they took all our passports," he said. From there they travelled to the Turkish city of Izmir where they boarded a flight bound for Germany, armed with fake Belgian passports, which they laterdestroyed."In Germany we changed planes and there was no problem. It was the samewhen we got to Sweden. The plane landed, I took our suitcase, and we walkedout with our baby."That suitcase now stands in one of 18 non-descript rooms in the Märsta refugee reception centre, just a few miles from Stockholm-Arlanda airport. In less than 48 hours after their arrival the couple had applied for asylum and was looking forward to a new life in Sweden."We want to live here and get Swedish nationality," said Hodl."I can work at any job but first I need to learn Swedish."Until then the Migration Board has provided the family with an allowance of155 kronor ($25) per day. They said their first priority would be to buy some warm clothes. What do you think?

Johannesburg.

Jesus Fish with cross found in Sweden

Jesus fish discovery a 'sign from God': Swede

Man finds 'Jesus fish' in Sweden: a sign from God

Fish factory workers in Sweden got a shock when a salmon was discovered on the assembly line with a clear sign of the cross on its belly, prompting workers to hail what has been dubbed the "Jesus Fish".
Lars Ludvigsson has worked for decades in the salmon industry, and currently spends his days filleting "tonnes" of Norwegian salmon on an assembly line inGothenburg

But Thursday was no ordinary day for Ludvigsson and his co-workers.

"This guy from Gambia suddenly started shouting that he'd found something special and everyone rushed over to look," Ludvigsson told The Local.

There, amongst all the other salmon, was a fish with a clearly marked black cross on its white belly.

"The scales were in the exact shape of a cross. The guy who found it was very excited, even I was excited actually. I've been in this business for 30 years and have never seen anything like it," Ludvigsson said.

"I called it The Jesus Salmon for fun and the name stuck. The guys who found it were convinced it was a sign from God."

Ludvigsson's Jesus fish marks the second time in recent weeks a fish has made headlines in Sweden. In August, Swedish men were warned to keep an eye out for a crotch-chomping fish found off the southern coast of Sweden.

While Ludvigsson can only speculate as to whether the fish is an omen or a coincidence, the humble fish has a firm place in biblical history. Jesus is said to have hauled in a miracle catch from the Sea of Galilee.

The fish itself is a popular Christian symbol, also referred to as Ichthys - a fish in two intersecting arcs.

So what next for the Jesus Salmon from Norway?

"I've kept the fish for myself," Ludvigsson told The Local with a hearty laugh.

"I'm planning to have a blessed dinner tomorrow."

Ratiba za baadhi ya mastaa hao za kujirusha ni kama ifuatavyo;

Odama.

JUMATANO

MIRIAM JOLWA ‘JINI KABULA’

TAMRINA POSHI ‘AMANDA’
“Mimi huwa natoka kwenye ishu maalum tu.”
JACQUELINE PATRIC

LULU MATHIAS  ‘AUNTY LULU’

neo.

At least 12 people have been killed and at least four injured in a shooting at a naval installation in Washington DC.
A gunman was killed at the scene. Police were initially searching for two additional "potential" gunman but one has since been ruled out.
Shots were reported at 08:20 local time (12:20 GMT), and authorities have sealed off a swathe of south-east Washington DC.
President Barack Obama said he mourned "yet another mass shooting".
Police responded to reports of two additional suspects in the shooting at Washington Navy Yard, but have since cleared one of them, a white male in a tan short-sleeve military-style outfit.
A black male, 40-50 years of age and wearing olive kit and seen carrying a long gun, was still being sought.
'Severe' injuries
Washington Police Chief Cathy Lanier said 12 people were deceased. Washington Mayor Vincent Gray said four people were wounded in the shooting.
Gunman 'aimed at us'
One police officer was shot in the legs and other police officers were injured in other ways.
At least three people including the shot police officer were brought to Washington Hospital Center by helicopter with "severe" gunshot wounds, said chief medical officer Janis Orlowski.
A female civilian was shot in the head and hand, and another woman was being treated for a shoulder wound, she said.
All three were in critical condition but their chances for survival were "very good", Dr Orlowski said.
Authorities said no motive was yet known for the shooting.
The FBI has taken control of the scene and the investigation, Ms Lanier said.
Security around the US Capitol was bolstered following news of the shooting. The US Senate adjourned for the day earlier than scheduled.
The shooting occurred at a building on the Navy Yard campus that serves as the headquarters for the Naval Sea Systems Command, which engineers, purchases, builds and maintains ships and submarines for the Navy.
Eyewitness Patricia Ward reported hearing at least seven shots from inside a cafeteria on Monday morning.
"It just happened so fast… I just ran," she said.
'Unimaginable violence'
Cmdr Tim Jirus was on the fourth floor of the building when he heard shots, he said.
Professor Gary Solis explains what the Washington Navy Yard does
"It sounded like a cap gun as opposed to a real gun," he said. "I feel very lucky to be alive. Someone standing there talking to me got shot. I didn't."
The Washington DC Metropolitan Police Department has instructed family members to reunite at the car park of a nearby baseball stadium.
President Barack Obama has been briefed on the matter by senior aides and has directed federal agencies to co-ordinate their response and investigation efforts.
At the White House, Mr Obama said he mourned "yet another mass shooting" and sent his thoughts and prayers to the victims.
"These are men and women going to work and doing their job," he said. "They know the dangers of serving abroad, but today they face the unimaginable violence that they wouldn't have expected here at home."
The Washington Navy Yard is the US Navy's oldest shore installation, first opened in the early 19th Century, according to the Navy.
